General Practice Aspiring Clinical Leader Fellowships

The Hub Plus, Derbyshire working alongside Derbyshire’s General Practice Provider Board and Derby & Derbyshire LMC are seeking expressions of interest for 3 Aspiring Clinical Leadership Fellows to start in September 2024. 

The three organisations work closely to provide comprehensive support to Derbyshire general practice though representation, contractual advice, providing a general practice voice and wrap-around training, educational and development support. 

 Developing the next generation of general practice leaders is a priority for all 3 organisations to safeguard the future of general practice. In light of this, we are seeking 3 enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals who are wanting to take their next steps on their leadership journeys to work alongside the Medical Directors of the three organisations. The 3 Aspiring Leaders will be supported to take ownership of certain portfolios of work, whilst being supported to develop through sponsorship, feedback and action learning sets.  

The Fellowship 

Successful fellows will be aligned to one of the three Medical Directors based on both interests and availability – Thursday afternoons. 

The successful candidates will work alongside Medical Directors initially shadowing and understanding the organisations and building up confidence to take on a defined portfolio of responsibilities and objectives which may include meeting attendances and chairing meetings, writing external communications, liaising with stakeholders, critiquing documents and contracts, writing business cases.  

You will also be expected to attend action-learning sessions and a programme of leadership development opportunities as part of your objectives.  

We recognise that taking on new leadership roles can feel daunting, the successful candidate will be supported by colleagues across The Hub Plus, GPPB and DDLMC to thrive in their role. We are looking for individuals who have not previously held a leadership role outside of their practice but who are keen to learn, are determined and self-motivated and who adopt a collaborative and supportive approach in all they do.   

Eligibility

Candidates must be a clinician on the appropriate professional register working within general practice in Derbyshire. (minimum hours/number of sessions to apply i.e. must be working at least 15hours) As an organisation, The Hub Plus strongly believe that diversity of background and experience contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently lead to better outcomes for all. We, therefore, particularly welcome candidates from under-represented groups. 

 

Time Commitment

1–2 sessions equivalent to 4hours 10 minutes - 8hours 20minutes weekly (Applicants to be free on Thursday afternoons is a priority to ensure they have access to each other and all 3 MDs) 

 

Responsibilities

Working with DDLMC, GPPB and The Hub Plus team, the successful candidates will have several key responsibilities including, but not limited to: 

  • Work with colleagues across the host organisation to learn the breadth of activity supported and how the organisations work together 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across primary and secondary care to improve the patient journey 
  • Meet with external stakeholders to enhance understanding of how organisations across the ICS relate to one another 
  • Take responsibility for maximising Fellowship by balancing self-directed learning with group and experiential learning and adopting a questioning, learning approach 
  • Attend meetings, identifying key elements of the agenda that may need attention and items that may need additional support/ escalating 
  • Where appropriate prepare and Chair meetings 
  • Take on a portfolio of responsibilities reflective of Medical Director working, this may include writing external communications, liaising with stakeholders, critiquing documents and contracts, writing business cases or project design and delivery. 
  • Champion host organisation through working with colleagues across general practice and those in training  
  • Ensure that Derbyshire funding is spent wisely by identifying opportunities for collaborative working  
  • Act as a champion for general practice and use your Fellowship opportunity to support the next generation of general practice leaders 

 

The Offer

Location: Hybrid – Base site RTC, RTC Business Park, London Road, Derby  

Contract type: Fixed Fellowship agreement for 12months with extension subject to funding,  

Pay: Aligned with your role band (maximum of £10k per session for a GP)

This fellowship is not an employment position but a grant to allow the individual the ability to develop in a specific subject area and share learning with the wider general practice.
