All the information you need to know about placements in general practice...
Work experience offers hands-on exposure to real work environments, allowing individuals to observe and participate in daily activities. Gaining experience in Primary Care is especially valuable, as it provides insight into the entire patient journey, exposes you to a variety of roles, helps you develop essential skills, and bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world healthcare scenarios.
Importantly, work experience isn't just for students—it's beneficial for everyone. Whether you're exploring career options, developing new skills, transitioning into a new role, re-entering general practice, building confidence, or enhancing your employability, work experience can help. And we're here to support you on that journey.
Practices often receive multiple work experience requests from students and schools, which can be challenging to manage. To address this, we work closely with Joined Up Careers Derbyshire to support school-aged students interested in careers in health and social care. However, due to risk assessments and legal responsibilities, it is difficult to provide placements for students under 16.
For students under 16, we participate in Springpod, a virtual work experience programme. More information about this can be found here: Future Talent Future Heroes (Springpod).
To view current work experience opportunities across Derbyshire, please visit the Work Experience Portal on the Joined Up Careers Derbyshire website: Joined Up Careers Derbyshire.
For students aged 16 and over, we offer opportunities through our partnerships. We support the Pathways to Medicine Programme at the University of Nottingham and are working with the University of Derby to develop a similar programme for nursing.
