What is General Practice Nursing?

General practice nursing, also known as primary care nursing, is a specialised area within the nursing profession that focuses on delivering holistic care in a community setting. General practice nurses work closely with general practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare professionals to provide patient-centered care that includes prevention, treatment, and management of a wide range of health conditions.

Course overview

The programme aims to equip registered nurses, who are new to general practice, with baseline competence in the General Practice Nursing (GPN) role. It combines academic and work-based learning to ensure comprehensive training.

What is covered during the course?

The programme covers essential clinical skills necessary for GPNs, including venepuncture, ear care, wound management, cervical cytology, and immunisation and vaccination training. Additionally, it lays the groundwork for managing chronic conditions. This programme is structured to develop both clinical and academic skills, preparing nurses for a successful career in General Practice Nursing.

Start date: January 2025

Duration: 40 weeks part-time over two semesters

Attendance: This programme is delivered face-to-face. The usual day of study is Thursday.
